Joey lost his battle with an aggressive form of blood cancer called Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in June of 2005. He was diagnosed at age 16, and it took his life two days later. Our family started a foundation as a way to prevent future families from suffering the same loss and also a way to celebrate the life of Joey with friends and family each year.
The Joey O’Brien Memorial Golf Tournament, Foundation, and Courage Scholarship were then created. Joey was an avid golfer and worked in the summer at the local golf course, Brown’s Lake Golf Club. This year marks the 15th Annual Joey O’Brien Memorial Tournament. Donations in excess of $600,000 have been given to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Joey O’Brien Courage Scholarship recipients over the past 14 years. With your continued support in 2020, we hope to reach $700,000 in donations for childhood cancer research and scholarship awards to students who have overcome cancer related adversity in their lives.
We are eternally grateful for all the generosity our guests have shown. Through this, we hope to aid in the fight to eliminate childhood cancer, while keeping Joey’s joy and kindness alive.
We look forward to seeing you on May 30, 2020, or receiving your donation for our 15th annual Joey O’Brien Memorial Golf Outing.
Along with raising money for Leukemia research at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Joey O’Brien Foundation also awards local high school students with the Joey O’Brien Courage Scholarship. The Courage Scholarship awards students who have survived or are currently battling cancer with a college scholarship.
